Mr. Duncan's Biography

Hi, I am glad that you are reading this. Most likely, I am either your teacher or your child’s teacher. Either way, I am sure that you would like to know something about me. So, here goes.

My name is Sean Duncan. I was born and raised in New Jersey, where my parents, brothers, and sister still live. After high school, I went to Richard Stockton College, a small school on the Jersey Shore just outside of Atlantic City. After four (plus a little) years, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Marine Science.

After graduation, I went to work for Rutgers University as a Field and Laboratory Technician/Security Guard at one of their marine field stations which was actually an old Coast Guard station built on the end of a pier extending out into the bay. Part of my job was to stay there at night and make sure it didn’t sink into the ocean when no one was looking. I worked for Rutgers for a year and a half before I decided I wanted to pursue teaching.

I moved to California in the summer of 1997 and started work on my Master’s Degree in Biology (still in progress) at CSU, Sacramento, where I also completed the Teacher Credentialing Program. In 2000, I got my first teaching job at Thurgood Marshall Continuation School in Sacramento, teaching physical and life sciences, physical education, and character education. In 2002, I decided I really didn’t enjoy the heat in Sacramento, so I started applying for teaching jobs across the state. Carmel called me for an interview and Presto! Here I am.

My first two years at Carmel High were very busy for me. I taught two courses, Integrated Science and Technology Core. Integrated Science was a brand new course at Carmel, so I had to develop the curriculum from scratch. The Tech Core program, a computer-based course in which students learned about various technologies, required a significant amount of my time to monitor and maintain.

I have also been involved in several extracurricular activities, including NCBI, Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), The Tolerance Project, AVID, and the Service-Learning Project. All of which helped make for a wonderful first couple of years. As a matter of fact, I have no complaints about the first two years, except the whole budget-crisis-wondering-if-I-have-a-job-next-year thing that the district went through in 2002-2003.

I am expecting that this year will prove to be even more enjoyable then the last two, and already know that it will certainly be busier.  I am teaching two new courses for me, Biology and Anatomy & Physiology, as well as Global Science, which is a new spin on Integrated Science.

I have taken on the responsibilities of the Science Department Chairperson and been elected to the Board of Directors for the Regional Chapter of NCBI, this year. And, I plan to continue helping out with the extracurriculars that I have already become involved with over the past two years.

I am really looking forward to a great year and hope you are as well.
